DSC for Income Tax e-Filing & ITR: Complete Guide
Published August 6, 2026 · By DSCKart
On the Income Tax e-Filing portal, a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is how a return or form is signed and verified electronically. It is a certificate issued by a Licensed Certifying Authority under the IT Act, 2000 that binds a cryptographic key to a verified identity — the legal equivalent of signing the return by hand. For some taxpayers it is the only permitted way to verify a filing; for others it is one option among several.
Who Must Use a DSC for ITR
- Companies and LLPs — returns must be filed under digital signature.
- Taxpayers under tax audit — where accounts are required to be audited under Section 44AB, the return must be signed with a DSC.
- Chartered accountants — a CA signing audit reports and other forms on the portal does so with their own certificate.
Individuals and HUFs who are not under audit do not need a DSC. They can e-verify a return using Aadhaar OTP or another EVC method — net banking, bank account or demat-based verification. Many still choose a DSC because it removes the dependency on OTP delivery and is required anyway for MCA, GST or tender work.
Which DSC to Buy
- Class 3 Individual DSC — for proprietors, directors, partners and CAs signing in their own name. This is the certificate most Income Tax filers need.
- Class 3 Organisation DSC — for forms signed in the name of a company or LLP.
Class 2 certificates were discontinued by CCA India on 1 January 2021, so Class 3 is the only class currently issued. Details of the individual certificate are on the Class 3 Individual DSC page.
Documents Required
Class 3 Individual DSC:
- PAN card
- Aadhaar card with the mobile number linked for OTP
- Recent passport-size photograph
- Active email ID and mobile number for OTPs during KYC
Class 3 Organisation DSC:
- Organisation PAN card
- Certificate of Incorporation or registration proof
- Authorised signatory's PAN and Aadhaar
- Board resolution or authorisation letter naming the signatory
- Signatory's passport-size photograph
A 2-minute Video KYC replaces physical paperwork — nothing is couriered or attested.
How to Register a DSC on the e-Filing Portal
The portal's menus change from time to time, so treat this as the general sequence rather than an exact click path:
- Install the USB token drivers and the portal's signing utility (emsigner / emBridge), and keep the utility running.
- Log in to the Income Tax e-Filing portal with the PAN under which the certificate will be registered.
- Open the DSC registration option under My Profile.
- Plug in the USB token and choose the provider and certificate when prompted.
- Confirm that the PAN embedded in the certificate matches the logged-in PAN, then submit to complete registration.
Once registered, the same certificate can be used to sign returns, audit forms and other submissions until it expires.
Common Errors and Fixes
- Token not detected — drivers or the signing utility are missing, not running, or blocked by the browser. Install both, launch the utility, then reload with the token connected.
- DSC not registered — complete the registration step under the correct login; a certificate registered under another PAN will not work.
- PAN mismatch — the PAN inside the certificate must match the taxpayer or signatory account. A certificate issued with incorrect details has to be reissued.
- Expired certificate — obtain a fresh Class 3 certificate and register it again; see DSC renewal.
- Browser or Java issues — the signing utility is a separate local application; if signing silently fails, restart it before assuming the certificate is at fault.
If Your DSC Has Expired
Certificates cannot be extended. When one expires, a fresh Class 3 certificate is issued and registered again on the portal. If your existing USB token is FIPS-compliant you can reuse it and pay only for the certificate. Full details are on the DSC renewal page.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a DSC mandatory for filing ITR?
It is mandatory for companies and LLPs, and for taxpayers whose accounts must be audited under Section 44AB. Individuals and HUFs who are not under audit can e-verify their return using Aadhaar OTP or another EVC method instead, so a DSC is optional for them.
Which DSC do I need for Income Tax e-Filing?
A Class 3 Individual DSC if you sign in your own name — as a proprietor, director, partner or chartered accountant. A Class 3 Organisation DSC if the return or form must be signed in the company's or LLP's name.
Can I use the same DSC for Income Tax, GST and MCA?
Yes. One Class 3 certificate can be registered on the Income Tax e-Filing portal, GST, MCA21 and EPFO. You register the same certificate separately on each portal; you do not need to buy a new one for each.
Why does the e-Filing portal say my DSC is not registered?
The certificate has either not been registered under your profile on the portal, or it was registered under a different PAN or user. Log in with the correct account and complete the DSC registration step with the token plugged in.
The portal cannot detect my USB token — what should I do?
This is almost always a local setup issue: the token drivers or the portal's signing utility (emsigner/emBridge) are not installed, not running, or blocked by the browser. Install both, run the utility, plug in the token and retry with the browser restarted.
My DSC has expired mid-season. Can I extend it?
No. A certificate cannot be extended. You obtain a fresh Class 3 certificate and register it on the e-Filing portal again — the process takes about 15 minutes at DSCKart, and an existing FIPS USB token can be reused.
