Overview
A Digital Signature Certificate cannot be extended once issued. When your DSC expires, "renewal" means obtaining a fresh Class 3 certificate — with a new validity period — before or right after the old one lapses. The good news: if your existing USB token is FIPS 140-3 compliant and in working condition, the new certificate loads onto the same token, so you don't pay for a new one.
Every renewal is issued as a Class 3 certificate (Class 2 was discontinued by CCA India on 1 January 2021). It stays legally valid on MCA21, Income Tax, GST, EPFO, DGFT, ICEGATE and e-tender portals across India. As per CCA guidelines, all DSC renewals must be issued on a FIPS 140-3 compliant USB token. If your current token is FIPS 140-3, you can reuse it. If it is an older FIPS 140-2 token, you'll need a new FIPS 140-3 token to download your renewed certificate. Tokens already holding a valid DSC keep working until that certificate expires. Yes. Because a DSC cannot be extended, renewal always issues a fresh Class 3 certificate — whether your old one is about to expire or has already lapsed. There's no penalty for renewing after expiry; you simply can't sign on government portals until the new certificate is issued.
Renew 7–15 days before the expiry date. This gives buffer for Video KYC and token loading so your MCA, GST, Income Tax or DGFT filings are never interrupted.

No — a renewed DSC is a brand-new certificate with a new key pair and validity period. It carries the same identity details (your verified name, PAN, organisation) but is technically independent of the expired one.
