DIR-3 KYC 2026: Deadline, DSC Requirements & How to Avoid the ₹5,000 Penalty

Published September 21, 2026 · By DSCKart

DIR-3 KYC for FY 2025-26 is due on the MCA portal by September 30, 2026. Every director whose DIN was approved on or before March 31, 2026 must complete it, and filing the standard eForm requires a currently valid Class 3 Digital Signature Certificate. Miss the date, and your DIN is deactivated — with a flat ₹5,000 fee to bring it back.

What Is DIR-3 KYC?

DIR-3 KYC is the Ministry of Corporate Affairs' annual "know your customer" verification for every Director Identification Number (DIN) on record. It has been mandatory since FY 2019-20, introduced to keep the DIN database current and weed out dormant or duplicate DINs. Filing it is what keeps a DIN in "Approved" status and able to sign MCA21 forms.

The 2026 Deadline

DIR-3 KYC for the financial year ending March 31, 2026 must be filed by September 30, 2026. This is an annual, recurring deadline — every DIN holder who meets the filing criteria must refile each year, not just once after allotment.

Who Needs to File

Filing is required by every individual who:

  • Was allotted a DIN on or before March 31, 2026, and
  • Holds "Approved" DIN status as per MCA records

This includes directors who have since resigned, and designated partners of LLPs holding a DPIN. Whether the DIN is currently attached to an active company makes no difference — the obligation follows the DIN itself.

DIR-3 KYC (eForm) vs DIR-3 KYC-WEB — Which One Needs a DSC

The MCA offers two filing routes, and only one of them needs a Digital Signature Certificate:

DIR-3 KYC (eForm)DIR-3 KYC-WEB
Who files itFirst-time filers, or anyone whose mobile number, email or address has changedDirectors with no changes to last year's filed details
DSC requiredYes — a valid Class 3 Individual DSC, plus certification by a practicing CA/CS/CMANo — verified by OTP sent to the registered mobile and email only
Data entryFull form filled fresh, including address and identity proofsPre-filled from MCA records; details cannot be edited

In practice, most directors who filed correctly last year and have no changes can use the quicker WEB route. Anyone filing for the first time, correcting details, or updating contact information needs the eForm — and therefore a valid DSC.

Documents Required

  • PAN card
  • Aadhaar card
  • Permanent address proof (voter ID, driving licence, or passport)
  • Current address proof, dated within the last two months
  • Recent passport-size photograph
  • A valid Class 3 Individual DSC — required only for the eForm route

Step-by-Step: Filing DIR-3 KYC with a Class 3 DSC

  1. Check your existing DSC's validity. The certificate must not expire before the date you actually submit the form — an expired DSC cannot sign the eForm.
  2. Order or renew a Class 3 Individual DSC if you don't have one, or if it's expiring soon. DSCKart issues these online with document submission over WhatsApp and a short video KYC.
  3. Download the DIR-3 KYC eForm from the MCA21 V3 portal and fill in your details.
  4. Get it certified by a practicing CA, CS or Cost Accountant, who digitally signs alongside you.
  5. Attach your DSC using the MCA's signer utility, enter your token PIN, and upload the form.
  6. Save the acknowledgement generated after successful submission as proof of filing.

What Happens If You Miss the Deadline

Directors who don't file by September 30 have their DIN marked "Deactivated due to non-filing of DIR-3 KYC" starting October 1. A deactivated DIN cannot sign any MCA21 e-form — which blocks annual return filings, new director appointments, and any other filing that needs that director's signature, for the company as a whole. To reactivate the DIN, the director must file the complete DIR-3 KYC eForm along with a flat ₹5,000 late fee.

Common Mistakes That Delay Filing

  • Name mismatches — even minor differences between how your name appears on PAN, Aadhaar and the DIN database (e.g. with or without a middle name) can cause rejection.
  • Outdated address proof — a utility bill or bank statement older than two months from the filing date will not be accepted.
  • Photo format issues — photographs that are too large, in the wrong file format, or without a plain background are commonly rejected.
  • An expiring or expired DSC — the certificate must be valid on the exact date you sign and submit the form, not just when you started the process.
